Subira Pear Schnapps from Austria

Subira Pear Schnapps is a particularly rare regional speciality from Vorarlberg. We produce it from an old variety of cider pears called Subira, harvesting them from our local standard trees. This pear is mainly used for distilling schnapps, as it produces an extremely strong and tart aroma. In addition, the flesh is relatively hard and woody even when ripe, which make it unsuitable for eating.

As schnapps, however, it tastes excellent! The intense aroma and the spicy, slightly tart taste are simply beyond compare. An excellent digestif, but also a pleasure between meals.

Enjoyment recommendation: Enjoy Subira Pear Schnapps in a Prinz Schnapps Glass or Stamperle Glass, at a temperature of between 17 and 20 °C.

Background knowledge: The Subira pear was named as an insult. Called the "Saubirne" in Austria, its intense fragrance tempts you to bite into it, but the woody flesh is hard to swallow. Colloquially, it was therefore known as the "sau" (sow) "birne" (pear), meaning that it was only fit to feed the pigs.
